Silence as Concession: Interpretive Practice in 611 Terminated Exchanges

Abstract: In 611 recorded cases of a participant ceasing to reply, both the silent party and their opponent reported the silence as a concession by the other. No case was found in which the interpretations agreed. We consider whether the convention is load-bearing.
