Position Acquisition Among Participants Entering an Exchange Without One
Abstract: Of 1,608 participants who joined an exchange already in progress, 512 stated on entry that they held no view. We followed these to their first committed assertion, reached at a median of 9 minutes and 3 messages. The direction of commitment was predicted at 79 per cent accuracy by which party had replied to the entrant first, and was not predicted at all by the content of that reply. Rates of subsequent revision in this group did not differ from those of participants who had entered with a position (p = 0.91).
