Provenance of Citations to a Primary Experimental Report in Extended Disputes
Abstract: We traced 1,043 citations of a single primary experimental report, made in support of a position across 31 channels over 19 months, to the source from which the citing participant obtained them. Sixty-three citations, or 6.0 per cent, reproduce a quantity, a figure, or a passage that appears in the report. The remaining 980 reproduce, to the word in 611 cases, one secondary summary of it. Median chain length from the citing message to the report is three intermediaries. Of the 1,043 citations, 794 attribute to the report a numerical value; that value appears in the report in 68 cases and differs from the nearest value in it by more than an order of magnitude in 402. Where a participant was asked which section of the report contained the result they had attributed to it, the question was answered in 11 instances. We record that the report is a real document, that we obtained it without difficulty, and that a copy is held by the archive.
