Uptake of a Descriptive Finding by the Population It Describes

Abstract: An earlier estimate of the return interval in long-running disputes was circulated in 19 of the 47 communities from which its corpus had been drawn. We re-coded six months of subsequent exchanges in those communities against 19 matched controls. The interval is unchanged at 11.3 messages in both arms. In the exposed communities the word cycle now appears in 57 per cent of exchanges, in every instance applied by one participant to the other.
