Metabolic Cost of Maintaining an Unrevised Position Over Extended Intervals
Abstract: Using indirect calorimetry on 24 participants across a 38-month dispute, we estimate the cost of holding a position unchanged at 4.7 kilojoules per participant-day, rising to 11.2 during intervals in which the position is contradicted. Revision is a single expenditure of 0.9 kilojoules. Both figures appear in Table 3; no participant elected the second.
