Repetition of a Contested Levelling Line Under the Original Conditions
Abstract: A levelling line of 8.2 km, the subject of a dispute conducted over fourteen months, was re-run with the instrument and staves of the original survey and under comparable conditions of temperature and hour. The two runs agree to within 4 mm over the distance. We reported the repetition to the channel in which the dispute was being conducted. Of 63 participants, 17 per cent responded to it; of those, the majority raised the question of who had paid for the work. In the six weeks following, the disputed figure was restated 41 times, on each occasion at its pre-repetition value. The dispute had been characterised throughout as awaiting an independent measurement. We record that a measurement was obtained, that it was independent, and that the dispute did not afterwards concern it.
