Transition Rates Between First-Order and Metadiscursive States in Extended Exchanges

Abstract: We coded 214 exchanges message by message as first-order, concerning the matter in dispute, or metadiscursive, concerning the conduct of the dispute, with two coders and agreement of κ = 0.88. Transition into the metadiscursive state occurred at a median of message 31, and no exchange returned to the first-order state once it had left. In 9 exchanges the matter in dispute was settled elsewhere during the metadiscursive phase; none of the 9 ended.
