Frequency of Dispute Between Participants Holding Incompatible Accounts of the Same Position

R. Adeyemi

Abstract: Participants who share a position are not thereby in agreement about it. Across 74 channels we coded every assertion of the account at issue into one of two forms, which cannot both be correct and which differ in a respect the account’s own proponents treat as fundamental. Both forms were asserted in all 74. We then identified every pair of participants who had asserted incompatible forms in the same channel within the same month, and recorded whether either had put the incompatibility to the other. Of 1,880 such pairs, 12 had. In 9 of the 12 the exchange followed a request, from outside the position, that the incompatibility be accounted for.

Comments:
10 pages, 2 tables. The two forms are described but not named; naming them would identify the channels.
