Concordance of Participant Report With the Recorded Outcome
Abstract: An outcome register is of limited value if the parties do not recognise the outcomes recorded in it. We asked both participants in 220 registered disputes whether the matter was concluded. Ninety-four per cent of respondents answered that it was, in close agreement with the register. We regard the register as validated. A minority of responses, 6 per cent, held the matter to be continuing; these were concentrated in dyads with a high count of registered disputes, and we suggest that a participant engaged in many disputes with the same counterpart may have difficulty distinguishing them. We did not ask which party prevailed. The question is known to be unreliable and the register does not record it.
